An unhappy Crystal Palace fan has set up an online petition calling for Liverpool and Christian Benteke to be punished
Crystal Palace suffered a heart breaking 2-1 loss at the hands of Liverpool at Selhurst Park on Sunday after conceding through a controversial penalty late into injury time.
The award of the penalty was most certainly a topic for much debate after the game as Damien Delaney made only the slightest of contacts on Christian Benteke and Palace manager Alan Pardew was left incensed that referee Andre Marriner decided to award the spot kick to Liverpool for the offence.
I can honestly say I didn’t make contact with benteke today and IF there was slight contact I didnt impede him and certainly didn’t feel there was enough to award a penalty in the 96th min… If a penalty is awarded that late it has to be unequivocal, I waited over an hour to speak with the officials and in fairness to Andre Marriner he said he didn’t think it was a penalty but he trusted his linesman that much he awarded it. With the way the game was ref’d and the physicality of both teams it was unbelievably harsh. With how Wilfred and Yannick were man handled by Liverpool players over the course of the game, which I’ve no problem with, it was a really tough decision to take so late. All I can do is swallow it and hope to put this right. 🔴🔵🔴🔵
Experts have been left divided over whether the penalty should have been awarded but the Palace faithful most certainly have been left aggrieved and one fan is so angry that he has gone on to set up an online petition calling for Benteke to be banned while Liverpool to be docked points for the ‘dive’.
The petition on Change.org, reads, “During the Premier League game on Sunday 6th March 2016 between Crystal Palace and Liverpool in the 94th minute Liverpool player Christian Benteke DIVED to con the refereeing officials to award Liverpool with a penalty which subsequently won them the game.
Palace fans angry at Benteke
“According to the football association or “FA” diving or “simulation” is against the rules. We, fans of Crystal Palace, demand that the FA look into this decision and if found that Christian Benteke did simulate contact he should be banned for a number of games and Liverpool Football Club “LFC” to be fined 6 points at a minimum.
“We understand that the result of the game cannot be changed but the FA need to come down on this sort of behaviour.”
At the time of writing, the petition has already amassed over 2,100 supporters and while such a demand is unlikely to be acted upon by the Football Association, it shows how disgruntled the Palace fans really are by Benteke’s theatrics.
