Andros Townsend has always been considered a very talented footballer and although one could argue that the attacker has not quite fulfilled his potential, he is a type a player a fan of any team would surely want in their respective side.
Therefore, Crystal Palace were understandably very excited after it was announced that the Eagles had managed to secure the services of Townsend from Newcastle United back in July earlier this year.
Palace activated Townsend’s £13 million release clause at Newcastle and it has been claimed that the Premier League outfit offered the winger wages well over £55,000-per week to convince him to arrive at Selhurst Park.
While Palace did make a sizeable investment on Townsend, many felt that the 25-year-old would prove to be a very good signing for the club and even potentially help them challenge for Europe during the current campaign.
It was expected that Townsend was be the player who would provide quality service to expensive new recruit Christian Benteke, as well as contribute in front of goal himself.
Townsend has been disappointing so far for Palace
However, it has to be said that Townsend has flattered to deceive at the London based outfit so far. The winger has managed only one goal and one assist in the Premier League (both of which came in the 4-1 victory over Stoke City) and while the stats may not tell the whole story all the time, such a return is most certainly a poor one after 11 games into the season.
Townsend has proven to be no more than average and was even dropped for the encounter against Liverpool a few weeks ago in favour of Chung-Young Lee.
It is difficult to pinpoint where the problem really lays for Townsend at the moment and with the take-home salary he can enjoy at Palace these days, one can imagine it takes a lot of focus and discipline to not get sucked into a lavish world of pretty girls, fast cars and no deposit casinos.
That said though, it is unfair to state that Townsend lacks focus due to the excesses that football can bring and one can simply attribute the former Tottenham Hotspur star’s current poor form to inconsistency as well as an inability to adapt to Palace’s playing style.
There is a general consensus that Townsend will eventually come good for Palace and given his wonderful abilities one can be sure of that.
With Palace enduring a terrible run though, now is the perfect time for Townsend to step up to the plate and prove his worth by contributing more to stop the Eagles’ current rut in form.
